No it should rebuild lost or curupt data needed to load the OS.
Have any of your mates got a windows XP Disk?

Is it a branded machine like HP? Dell. If so these may have some of there own utilities. If its HP/Packard Bell/Compaq/Advent give me the model number I may be able to help.
