Until recently K1NGS was the most expensive plate ever. It sold for 185k in Dec 1993.

But that has just been beaten by the guy who paid 201k for 51NGH in April of this year.

As a side note in Nov '98 S1NGH sold for a bargan like 86k.

All the above info is freely available on the DVLA site. Private sellers may have sold plates for more, but I've never seen/heard about it.
