For the ecu to know it has even moved it needs to receive a speed reading, it is possible that it uses another sensor if it has one but I see no need for it have another, for what function, therefore if it does no know it has moved it cannot clock up miles it knows nothing about.
If you want me to look in to this in more detail I will try to get a wiring diagram for the van and let youm know if there is any way they could have done this.
