What you should of done

is boot of the windows xp cd, go thorugh the process of installing windows, but instead of doing an install, repair the current installation and, with a bit of luck, it would be fine.
The mere fact alone it gave you the windows xp startup menu proves there is an operating system on there.

Not clued up on that part of it Dan, the fact that it kept looping was the strange bit and my mind just went blank.... so off it went to the 'poorly PC Shop'.
I am going to be extremely wary of running Chkdsk at anytime now on my other PC and laptop.
