the 3/4 oil level seems to be generally accepted by those in the know, and in my experience is true.

as far as different oil types is concerned it's purely down to viscosity regarding how much is used.. thinner oil will get used faster than thicker irrespective of type.
Non-synthetic may feasibly get thinner with hard use and temperature than good synthetic of the same grade, so giving the impression it gets used faster?
