The numbers are as it says - etched into the glass. That means they are actually burned into the surface of the glass with a specially acidy type stuff.

We do this at work, and the only way I can think of to cover it up is to use the acidy stuff to "block" over the number plate numbers. So instead of having a bunch of etched numbers you have a small etched rectangle on the screen instead.....
