Just looking at that picture again, it looks like the core plug is still in there, but they are galvanized steel so they are always the weak part (the housing itself is cast aluminium)

Another housing will probably be the best way, although i would out a new thermostat in aswell while its off as they are notoriously crap on CVH's. Halfords, about £3.49
