i have the same problem on my 2wd saff but the phase sensor is new.im not sure if it is gapped spot on but the car seemed to run fine.also the car wont start when is hot.could the 2 be linked???

almost certainly caused by the connectors along the bulkhead above the back of the engine - split them check condition of pins and reconnect, paying special attention to the one nearest the battery with larger wires in As a 4x4 owner you should get used to periodically unplugging those connectors and plugging them back together to clean the contacts... eventually the loopy tacho issue will become a misfire if left.
