It holds oil under pressure so that say if you get oil surge/starvation or for any reason your oil pressure drops below a preset level the valve opens and keeps the pressure from going dangerously low. A warning light tells you that its deployed itself so no damage occurs thru oil starvation.
It also means when starting your engine you can pressurize the oil before the engine cranks over.
