My parents are on their 3rd Range Rover. The current one is the new shape, but before that they had a MY01 2.5 DHSE and a MY96 2.5 DSE. Both were from new, the P plate car had done 70k when we had got rid, and the 2nd had 34k on when we got rid in 2004.

Both cars had new engine's. Both cars had an array of suspension problems. The first car spat out it's A/C belt which broke a lot of things and cost nearly as much as the car to repair. Both car's front arm rests fell off. The 2nd car had more toys, but was less reliable with niggles to do with ABS and steering components. My mum has looked after each car so has had a gentle on road life, and the local dealer had the car in every instance.

They both averaged 23 mpg and the early diesel had 6k service intervals, and the latter car had 10k intervals. Tyres used to come around every 20k at around £100 / corner for 255/?/18's.

Clearly they like the cars, but for me it is too risky to own unless you have deep pockets. I would be more inclined to go with a 4.6 with LPG, but i can assure you <15 mpg should be expected, but it has 2?? bhp as apposed to the 2.5 which has 14? bhp i think <and feels it.

Good luck with your purchase if you decide to go ahead
