european pumps mate have a latch that you clip down but it has a automatic cut off when fuel hits the nozzle
Strangely enough, I was asked the same question the other day...
I wedge the filler cap between the handle and it's surround and stick my hands in my pockets where it's warm
Been doing for years without any problems, some petrol stations don't like it though, been told off once or twice
