IS it black smoke out the back? which is a sign the coolant temp may be faulty!

but from your problem I'd say the phase sensor(located in the distributor) wires have maybe corroded or it's not adjusted correctly also check the crank pulley sensor ISN'T dirty or even incorrectly adjusted(both the latter will cause ur rev counter to jump around)!
