if you don't get the rotor arm position right, how's the spark going to jump from it to the correct terminal on the cap to fire the correct cylinder in sequence?

the phase sensor position is related to the rotor arm, so get that right and you're away. there's more chance of the rotor being directly in line with the post in the cap at the right time then, so less liklihood of it jumping elsewhere and giving you a shock
