Default speeding - why take it to court?

Just heard back from my brother, he was in court for speeding today

He got himself 3 points and £70 fine with £35 court costs for 50mph in a 40mph limit.

Now he did what he did so no-one has got a prob with the points, but why have they taken it to court when its clearly a open and shut case?

Just a way to get more money I suppose
