Default xr2i fuel pump damper

After finding out that my 2i running problem was due to 1 of the seals on the pump damper being perished causing loss of fuel pressure i went an ordered another one from ford. Temporarily i bridged the pump/fuel pipe with some fuel hosing to find out if it was that at fault or not and it was hence ordering a new 1 but.................are they actually needed?!?!

I was looking on ebay for pumps as orginally i thought it was that and all the ones i saw on there didnt have the damper but a normal fuel pipe joining them up instead. so....is it even worth having the damper?!?! guessing due to the shape of it stores a small amount of fuel (ie the dome bit) but if it aint needed im left wondering whether to bother with it or not?!?!

Its this bit here, bit worried incase the seals go again, but then guess its taken most of the cars life for it to perish thou....

and this is 1 of the ones that the damper removed and bridged with a pipe on ebay.......
