the 'cossie' pump is the same size from memory, the problem was that the sender arm would catch on the plastic bowl inside the tank, i bent the arm slightly to try and clear it, but when it went back together it still never worked.

i did a few tests and the sender/gauge were working fine ( moving the sender arm up and down would move the gauge)

just got used to it
