You must use the long input to reach the clutch / spigot bearing, and that means you must use the laygear that matches.
In turn, it is a lot easier then to use the mainshaft gears that match that laygear

btw. does that mean i need to change round the actual back half of the main shaft as well though as its different at the rear end where it used to go into the drive for the front prop. can i just pull all the geares off the 4x4 shaft and put them on the 2wd one, them use the front part of the 4x4 mainshaft and the layshaft?
