Windows recovery console short that problem out. You will need an XP disk and go through the motions of reloading it back on to laptop but where it says "R" to repair hit it. (Not sure what the command is from there)

Alternativly if your PC is branded IE HP/Packard Hell it may have its own recovery options which could help.
