It may be advisable, but it is not necessary to allow fitment.
I personally think that poorly specced coil-obers are the worse thing you could add to ANY Cosworth. Ruins the ride quality.

when i bought my car, the previous owner said it is neccessary to modify the rear chassis, but said he hadnt doen it as he didnt wanna ruin the car
he described it as opening the rear turrets??
is this neccesary, i'm running AVO coilovers and the rear can seem a little creaky and squeaky at times

By opening up the turrets I assume he means e-longating the hole in the top of the turret. This can be done (and in fact on mine we did it very slightly) but you can only really do this if you have a rear strut brace to hold the coilover in the outer most position.
As Mike says, modification to the inner arch is required, and on mine it took quite a bit of persuading with a hammer. Just painted up and greased and all has been well sinse.
