I have had good success with pioneer writers and also NEC as an allrounder in my shuttle pc I have an NEC ND4550 and find this great for dvd and cd writing and is a very fast reader as well, although my pioneer gives a slightly better write quality and is faster on dvd but it is not to good with writing cd's, I once had a liteon but found the write quality very poor on this and would never have another.

And a NEC or pioneer from the computer fair is only about £34, so you could have both within your budget.
