Did the car have any anti-freeze in it or only water ?? Sounds like it's just rust and sludge built up over the years.

Best bet is to back flush the radiator and re-fill with decent anti-freeze to the correct strength and then keep an eye on temps and stuff as it may have knackered the water pump.
