I've test driven the 172 Cup, and my brother-in-law has the 172 on a 51 plate. 172 is softer, but easier to drive, and feels like the 172 Cup would with a couple of passengers I guess.

They're great fun, but not in the same speed league as a Cossie. Also, not keen on the driving position.

Good second hand buy as they depreciate fast. You can get 2.5 year old 172's with 20K miles for under £9K in the latest shape. Similar age and shape Civic type R is at least £2K more but will last longer.

They're quite easy to get 200 bhp out of (L.A.D do a good conversion) so maybe the one that chased you was tuned?? Still - the normal 172 is about 1100 kg, (only about 100 lighter than a 3door/Saph 2wd, and down a good 55% on power on a good stage 1 Cossie, so not sure how it kept up!!!
