Things to line up.
Right, the distributor pulley first, turn the bottom pulley till its on TDC and make sure you note where the dizzy one lines up, mark it with paint and on the block or something if you need to, this is because they end up all over the shop and then people time the dizzy in, so if you remember where it was you wont have that issue.
The bottom pulley has n teeth sticking out, just before one of them is a cut into the pulley that goes right through each of the pulleys that are made into one big pulley, this is the TDC mark, thats what you need to line up on.
The cam pulleys have an arrow on them, these need to point towards each other when that mark is lined up.
So turn it like that before you start and make sure you understand yeah?
Take pictures if you want
Its not actually hard to do a head gasket, just time consuming.
you shoul really get the block checked if possible, although often they are ok, and the head will almost certianly need a skim
i like cometic gaskets myself, but they MUST have good lat surfaces or they wont seal, so if you cant get both checked, use a normal gasket instead like a "group a" gasket.
Thats all assuming you engine is fairly standard.
