problem sorted

i checked the timing and i was a tooth out - not sure how that happened - probably got confused with teh cut out instead of the lug as you said - chekced timing belt book this morning to make sure - took it apart over 2 weeks ago and broke the original pulley wheel hence forgetting which to use!

the main problem turned out to be leads 2+3 round the wrong way - must have fallen off as i passed then through the inlet manifold and then put on the wrong way round
