A few people have PMed me asking how I made my det cans, so I thought I would put all the info in a post with piccies.
What I used:
A good pair of ear defenders (no B&Q poo). Try a gun shop
Some copper pipe
A copper “T” piece
Some air line hose
Arraldite
What you do:
Drill a hole in the back of each ear muff (herr her, muff) and insert a short length of copper pipe. Make sure it protrudes past the insulation on the inside and has enough on the outside to jubilee your pipe to.
Arraldite the short sections of copper in, making sure they are fully sealed.
Use your air line hose to connect both ear muffs to the T.
From the T run a length of the hose under the bonnet.
Take another bit of copper pipe between six inches and a foot long. Squash one end (about an inch worth) flat in the vice and drill a hole though it. Make sure when you squash it that the end is totally sealed. Check it by blowing down it.
Bolt the squashed bit of the copper pipe some where on your engine block and jubilee the hose on the other end and you are done.
Basically it works like a doctors stethoscope…. But on a larger scale and for your engine.
In this picture you can see the hose coming out of the engine bay and into the car through the sunroof. We have used masking tap to secure it when mapping on the road.
One final note. When you use these kind of det cans you cannot map in the rain (apart from the sun roof being open)! The rain droplets make a real racket on the hose!
