You do have to have a slight step . We had the same problem. I evened out the step slightly from the hallway into the bathroom by fixing 6mm ply sheets on top of the floor boards in the hallway. This made the step into the bathroom less and left a slight step down into the bedrooms. But once the rooms were carpeted you cant tell.. It does make that difference going into the bathroom tho....
