they are effectively 'maintenance free' Paul (no greasing mechanism), but due to the proximity of the exhaust end up drying out the grease, with the subsequent wear etc.
You can replace the UJ if worn, and there is the possibility of getting one with a grease nipple fitted.

As long as you've checked and it's OK then that's fine - it makes an unbelieveable mess if it comes apart at speed!
