No, its a bespoke engine. Similar head design, but thats primarily because the M3 is a high compression NA engine producing over 100BHP/litre. Like the F1. And it runs Vanos, as well as a BMW based Engine Management System.
Some people will tell you its a modified 850 engine. But it isnt. I recommend getting hold of "Driving Ambition" if anybody wants to know more about the F1.
