thanks for all your input people. turned out to be rain water in the end.

ran the car on the drive for 5 minutes and it was still bone dry. must be where i drove the car in the rain and it dripped off the engine overnight.

i thought the header tank looked low on coolant but then i realised that it rises once the car is running so thats why i thought it must have gone down a lot!
