If you decide to drill it you will have to be accurate with the position otherwise TDC detection wil be out and therfore timing. I have a late 89 spec Escort turbo and it has the hole in the block for the sensor.

Have you considered mounting an aftermarket trigger wheel on the front pully or using a pully and position sensor off a cvh sierra?
