Please help

Why when i switch my desktop on (win 2K) the internet is there and i can use it straight away.

But when i unplug the ethernet cable from my pc to plug it in the laptop (the one connected to ntl modem) why does it not have internet?

Is it something to do with MAC addresses? Operating system compatibility?

Anyone able to help?
