Sellers warned about phishing email scam

23 September 2005

In response to customer feedback, autotrader.co.uk is warning customers of a 'phishing' email currently being sent out by scammers to users selling their vehicles online, in which customers are asked to give away their password.

The fake email has the subject line "Auto Trader Security Check *** DO NOT DELETE ***". The message begins with the headline 'Security Update', and falsely claims that 'for security reasons the following information must be confirmed'. Customers are then asked to enter their email address and password. Having obtained the customer's password, third parties are then able to place fraudulent ads.

Auto Trader is keen to stress that customers will NEVER be asked for their password in an email.

Please do not reply directly to this email.

If you are in any doubt about an email that has been sent to you, email enquiries@autotrader.co.uk or call 0845 345 3450 between 8am and 10pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5.30pm weekends.
