if its onboard, uninstall all the drivers, disable the onboard sound in the bios, enable it again after a reboot and see if windows picks it up. it it doesnt then id say your chip is fadgered. if its not onboard, check the card is seated properly in the pci slot.
I think it might be onboard and i tried what you said and still no joy
