so, is there any way i could get oil into the bottom end for a safe start up or will i have to cross my fingers and risk starting it up as it is?

Yes remove the spark plugs from the engine to reduce the load on the big end bearings and also remove the main lead coming out of the coil to stop any one getting a nasty belt off a stray HT lead, turn the engine over until the oil pressure light goes out do this 2 or three times to ensure that the oil has gettin round to the turbo or alternatively unscrew the oil feed pipe out of the top of the turbo and put it into a milk bottle or such like to ensure that the oil is getting to it then refit the oil feed pipe, plugs and leads and hope for the best that you have not fried you engine on the M40

keep us posted of what the out come was
