Question about CAT's on sierra sapphire 4x4 & engine type
Hello
Sorry if my message is a bit long winded but I’m after some advice reference my Sierra sapphire 4x4 cosworth 1993. I recently had a MOT on the car and it failed on emissions. Not too worried about this as the car has been sitting for about 3 months with half a tank of old fuel and redX in the tank which more than likely didn’t help with the emission test. What really concerned me is the person who was carry out the test said the car should have catalytic converter fitted to the car. I’ve owned this car since 2003 and it has never had a catalytic converter, when I purchased it was fitted with a mongoose stainless steel exhaust system with no CAT. So my question is should my cossie be fitted with a CAT ? I’ve looked on the internet and there seems to be conflicting opinions about this as to the year CAT’s were fitted to ford cosworths. The other question I have relates to type of engine in my car i.e is it a YBG or YBJ engine ?, the rocker cover is green hence I believe my engine might be a YBG but im not sure. Is there any way I can check to confirm what type?
Thanks Dex

good luck with that you either need to prove she was built before the cat designated cut off point or show the tester some proof the engine has been replaced with an earlier example most cossies will have had an engine change but the tester needs some kind of proof to follow the rulebook

There is no conflicting info, from Aug 1992 all cars, minus a very few exceptions are required to have a cat and pass the relevant MOT test.
And a Cossie that had a cat from new before that, is certainly not one of those exceptions and never has been
