Default Focus gearbox problem?

Hi all,

Wonder if anybody can shed some light on this.. I have a 2005 focus 1.6 petrol... been hearing an odd grinding / squeeking noise for about a week.. its quite loud now and sounds as if its comming from under the car.

The noise stops when i put the clutch down, and is at its loudest when free wheeling...

A mate of mine mentioned it might be a release bearing? does this sound about right?

If it is gearbox related would i need a new part, or a new box?

Thanks in advance
