been a slow progress stripping rusty thanks to the shit weather, got up there last friday to find three of the four tyres flat! i had to put a scaffold harness on and hook to the towing eye, and pull the bugger out strongman style!
anyway the loom is all out, that ecu casing is a right pig to get out! also got the prop shaft and exhaust off, going to bring them home next time i can get up there, backbox is one of the biggest ive seen!
was taking the insulation out of the arches when i noticed spot welds, looks like the arches have been done before, not very well though. found plenty of surface rust on the chassis aswell, need the purchase of these garages to go through asap now so i can get rusty home and on a spit to see just how bad it is. pics to follow

i meant to ask, whats the best way to remove the rear driveshafts? fronts i punched out with hammer and a bar, but the rears go into the transfer box so i didnt wanna risk wrecking it!

Shame to chop up a decent gti there's not that many of them left either.
Was there no 3 door base model shells about.
Your a brave man tackling that rs2000 but good luck to you mate.

thats the easier route chris, dont want the RS to lose its id though.
andy theyre different underneath due to the 4x4 prop shaft etc
i know its a shame stevos, but the rs2k 4x4 is the better car of thectwo. i see it as sacrificing a pawn to save a rook

lol nice try john but that aint gonna happen!
if at some point i come to my swnses and do away with rusty, id still be keeping the 4x4 stuff either for spares for my other rs2k or another project. a mate is trying to persuade me to build a mini rs2k 4x4 lol

PassionFord Post Whore!!
I wouldn't of broke a good gti such a waste of a good car.
You should of just bought a normal 3 door or gone to the scrappy and cut panels from one there

engine
gearbox
driveshafts
wheels
bits off the engine loom and a few other parts from the engine bay, alternator etc
so what i bought was effectively a rolling shell.
its not a waste, do you know how hard it is to find a shell in as good a condition as the gti one? near impossible! and i only paid 260 for it!
made most of that back by selling the bits im stripping

it travelled a long way if it was yours
pm me the reg mate and il let you know, if you want to know. it was featured in performance ford a couple of christmases ago and was in concourse condition back then.
im a lover of all mk6 escorts, used to own a gti in my teens, but at the end of the day if a gti has to die in order for an rs2000 4x4 to survive, the decision is one way traffic mate

Wasn't R815 LGF was it?

Cam Cover removed -
Upper Timing Cover removed -
Cam Sprockets Removed -
Cams Removed -
Cylinder Head Removed -
One of the most noticeable differences between the Galaxy 2.3 Head and the 2.0 RS Head is this waterway here which isn't used on the RS, we'll be using the RS head for this build so the 2.3 Head is surplus and in very good condition -
Back to the Block again, Head Gasket lifted off -
Oil Filter and Crank Sensor removed -
Crank Pulley removed -
Lower Timing Cover removed -
Timing Chains removed -
Oil Pump and Sprockets removed -
Engine flipped over on the stand -
Sump Pan removed -
Pickup Pipe and Baffle Plate removed -
Rest of sump and Balancer Shafts removed -
Here you can see what the balancer shafts are like inside the sump -
Pistons and Rods removed -
Crank Journals appear to be in good order -
Main Bearing Caps removed -
Crankshaft removed -
Block is now stripped bare -
Bores are in good order but I'll be reboring them and honing them myself anyway -
At this stage we are waiting on confirmed prices for Pistons and Rods, once we have those ordered and the Pistons in particular are here then things can start moving again. I'll have detailed photos as I go along but briefly, here are some of the modifications required to the block. This area here is where I'll drill, make and fit an oil return into the sump -
This area here is where there needs to be a "mismatch" piece made and fitted to all the RS Sump to mate to the 2.3 Block -
This hole on the underside of the block used to feed the balancer shafts and needs to be blocked off -
That's it for now, machine work on the block will be the next thing and once that's underway I can start stripping the 2.0 engine. Cheers!

i contacted ben through facebook and gave him the bad news, whoever owned it after him didnt look after it
Bens feature with the gti
the silver one is an rs2000 4x4 mate, and used to be owned by 1pd steve. he practically rebuilt it after saving it from am early grave. had its mot today, she needs more love, sills on both sides need doing, some bubbles appearing on am arch too, and the brake lines need changing asap! i dont drive it very often, but im going braided as soon as i find the time. sills and other bits are going to have to wait until after rusty the red is rebuilt or atleast tucked away in the garage

thats a lovely example you had there mate. i owned r952gkp 4dr gti as my 2nd car, loved it. still around i think?
i was gutted for ben, when i was stripping it all of the interior loom is like new, all the fixings, nuts and bolts etc clearly renewed when he worked his magic. il be keeping some of the bits and bobs for old rusty as they are literally like new

Interesting pics of the engine there. I didnt know the balance shafts were in the sump.
On a 4x4 escort are the floor pans different. Also I take it they have different mounting points for the rear suspension.
