The engine is mechanically very good it sounds very good, but it has lots of oil leaks to sort, the engine will be coming out for a full re gasket and inspection soon enough,
The drivetrain needs TLC, im going to replace every arm, bush and joint, the driveshafts are coming out for a full refurb with new joints etc etc, then tracking as its scuffing tyres badly it knocks and rattles from the under side, fuel tank will be comming out for a new pump and inspection,
Full service sensor kit, loom etc etc, at that point i will be more interested in how it performs, but at the moment i would hapilly trade 200bhp for nice driability. bit by bit i will build her to a std im happy with, my old T34 saff was and still is the most responsive YB ive driven and thats what i want this one to be like. but it has to be a nice place to be and most important;y it has to be reliable and trouble free.

The Porsche and your M5 did all of this without needing all of this intrusive surgery

Your very right mate, but the reason it is like it is, is because of previous owners spending money in all the wrong places, this is what gives fords a bad name for reliability,
I dont see the logic at all in tuning or spending £2k on brakes when the power steering doesnt work for example,
All people are interested in is making it fast and having good looking parts, where the basic things that cost very little sometimes only costing time and effort, get forgotten about.
I have to deal with it all day long here and im certainly not giving it 1bhp more than it already has untill im happy with it.

Looks a nice car, I hope you're happy with it. The world would be a boring place if we all drove about in reliable and economic cars. I'll be watching this thread for updates, it's nice to see a project thread from a tuner/enthusiast, there isn't any of that on this site that I'm aware of?

Good purchase at a reasonable price. You will love putting it right and improving the car, part of the fun with cossies. How right you are,the basics is without doubt the first port of call, tuning would be the last thing for me to as you rightly say the car has to be spot on first and foremost.
Good luck with it all,I will be keeping a close eye on this thread,I'm sure it will get very interesting.

Im not puting it on the dyno at 7500 rpm with an oil contaminated cam belt and loads of running faults. it needs work to make it right before any tuning takes place,im really not interested in how it performs yet, i want it to start and drive straight, and be reliable so when it is tuned it will work. Thsi is what the majority of Ford owners get so wrong When its right it will be on the dyno, but i have a great big list of things to do first. The way it drives it feels like peak power would be about 250bhp at 15000 rpm
This is the mistake I made on my 5 cab, I'm putting it right tho by ripping all the shit out and fixing all the silly faults.
I spent thousands "modifying" (fucking up) the car and now it's costing me a fortune putting it back to how it was (should be) lol.

How do the boost controllers work?
Is it like a stepper motor on the wastegate or piping controlled by a 4-20mA or 0-10v signal?
We use similar in industry if it is,just calibrate it to how far to open I.e fully closed,4mA fully open 20mA or whatever really.
Also totally agree with the above re:tuning, get it driving 100% first then add power safely.

Well, we are getting somewhere, ive been working on the car after work and managed to get a load of stuff done already,
The engine is now oil tight at last, all the belts are being done tomorrow and im installing the new boost controller aswell.
New boost hoses are here ready to go on, and the roof lining is trimmed ready to fit.
The front suspension height has been raised a little, but i will get the alignment and corner weighting done once ive done all the bushes etc.
Today i managed to make a base map and start the cruise and idle Live mapping she starts and drives like a totally different car now
I have a new fuel pump which i think will be a much easier fitment into the Escort Cosworth as its almost OE size instead of using the big 023 pump, and it flows more than an 044 so that needs to be done before we hit the top end mapping.
Im thinking of Hydraulic clutch, as it is ruining the car at the moment, the clutch has almost no clearance and getting gears prevents driving fast and tbh it ruins the whole drive of the car.
Anyone tried the black Ratchet and pawl kits? do they work in these? i know they are supposed to give more clearance whcih is what i need, the clutch isnt massivly heavy i can live with that side of it.
Im actually quite looking forward to the drive home tonight, im not dreading it as i have been due to the poor idle and low speed drivability, it was a real chore to drive

The bigger ratchet and pawl just gives more movement on the cable.
Id also do new clutch cable at same time and check to see the fork isnt bent.
If you are really desperate you can add spacers where it comes through the bulkhead but in reality its a bodge.
Hydraulic will be much nicer.
