the original pistons sat 0.100 down in the hole, these measure about 0.090 taller so should now be just 0.010 below square deck at tdc, im gonna have the block and heads machined just to check for flatness aswell.

I need to decide on my camshaft spec next ....

then get it all down the machinist for boreing, grinding and resaizeing

well ive finally done something to progress with this motor a little further, spookily enough having just read the last comments my missus is in hospital now there about to induce her 3rd daughter, im waiting for nan to finish work so I can drop my 2 girls off and go up the hospital !

anyway ive been thinking for a while that the puny 318 5.2 motor just isn't the one, to be a valuable motor at the end of it theres no question it needs a 440 like the big block dodge charger had, so ive just bought this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1315887729...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

just gotta get it home, strip down and hope its in good rebuildable condition, they even do a 512 ci stroker kit for them if I want to splash some cash........

will take a while to get sorted and shipped over but will give me the push to get on with it nearer Christmas time once baby has settled in

well the engine is landing on uk soil monday, we are about half way to getting the old motor out, very busy still with plant hire and our farm so its just getting a few stolen hours here and there lol

ive been having a good read up and I am going to have to change the tail housing and shaft from the original 727 gearbox into the one that's coming with the big block then she should hopefully slot right in
planning on dropping her in first and hooking it all up, if engine seems healthy we might just get her running and see how she runs during mock up. it will need to be built like I did my kit car then stripped for finishing touches before full paint.

from what ive read it appears the stock motor is 255 hp, 355 lbft im hopeing big free flowing headers will increase both those numbers 20, so not exactly a powerhouse but im thinking all I can do is get her fitted and running and see how she performs before I do any alterations for more power/torque.

ive got the 7.2 litre dodge 440ci motor in the yard and some 1 3/4" headers I got cheap, once shes on the engine stand il get some pics, just praying the motor isn't seized and is in a rebuildable condition as a cam and headers will see 300 hp, over 400 lbft im sure even with the low comp ratio.

We managed to strip the engine today and get it on the engine stand. So far looks ok but has had some water ingress and bottom end is seized, gotta get the pistons out somehow and see where were at, so far though looks like vehicle was in an accident and engine hadnt blown just been stood for many years.

well the engine looks good, to be sure were going for 30 thou over on bores, and 10 thou over on big ends and mains.
compression is around 7.5-1, so im going with forged replacement 6 pack pistons which will bring me upto 9.37-1 with my 88cc heads I got a full rebuild kit for a 440 hp minus cam.
ordered full whiplash cam kit, a new edelbrock avs thunder 800cfm carb and edelbrock performer rpm intake.

im hopeing it will make approx 390 hp 460 lbft gross from what ive read about the same as a stock 1960s 427 corvette engine

with the big headers and straight through 3" pipes it should sound awesome

while we wait for parts if theres time need to get the old 318 motor out and work out how were going to make the transmission work to fit it all in the stock dimensions.

I shall be having an ebay sale soon selling off all the 318 stuff ive got as I wont be needing it now

rear is just leaf springs, front has a spring loaded bar, I will need some uprated both ends as with 170 hp 300 lbft its like a boat, imagine 390 hp 460 lbft lol

all available from Australia if I cant find any alternatives, on my Dutton I used capri rear and triumph front springs

ive just checked my new pistons are 0.070 thou higher than stock pistons, which at my bore means a c/r increase of 1.4 so around 9.25 which is the listed limited of c/r with my new whiplash cam and iron heads.

ive found a dyno plot of a similar engine, ive got same motor, same cam, same c/r, same headers but I have 50 cfm less carb and stock heads instead of the edelbrock rpm heads stock.
they made 491 hp 578 lbft

just trying to find out how much the 50 cfm and heads is worth roughly

Well ive found the head flow results and my heads flow 45 cfm less at max cam lift and carb is 50 cfm less so if that costs me 100 hp she should make 391 hp 478 lbft, if I can get that il be more than happy

careful you will get smited calling my 4 door a muscle car lmao
its gonna be my 4 door charger as im building a charger motor and trans for it

we have made some good progress today while weve had a little time
engine stripped and on engine stand

Name: DSC_0274_zpsd5khqfyf.jpg
Views: 352
Size: 2.03 MB

transmission wise I need to put all the cars small block 727 gearboxes core in the big block housing

so we stripped truck box first to see how it all goes, then stripped car box and put main shaft in the big block casing

Name: DSC_0284_zps3jgxbvx0.jpg
Views: 341
Size: 3.21 MB
Name: DSC_0285_zpswwdnfnaa.jpg
Views: 285
Size: 3.13 MB

then we fitted the small block tailhousing and what I think is 1st and 2nd at the front, in the pic the small housing laying behind the box that is the original motorhome tailhousing that has the sbrake on it which I needed to get rid of.
gearbox all appears in excellent condition so just new gaskets and o rings, I did use motorhome front case housing as there same part number and I wanted to keep the same front case that the big block torque sits on.

Name: DSC_0289_zpsux3cibch.jpg
Views: 357
Size: 3.25 MB

and finally put the small blocks valve body on as I know that works well ive already set it up and tested it in the car and seemed to work well.

Name: DSC_0290_zps4yp5yfrr.jpg
Views: 314
Size: 3.19 MB

just need to fit the filter and belly pan, gear linkage and shes done, took about 6 hours total between 2 of us between doing other things.

and as its got the original tail housing it will bolt straight upto the car and standard prop will fit, gonna bolt the block to the gearbox and drop in the car then see if I have any engine mounts that will fit, if not I will make a pair of adaptors.

and my summit order will be here tmrw so once weve mocked up I will get the block and crank into machine shop for 30 thou over bore and 10 thou crank grind, its nice to be finally enjoying a little car work for a change its been quite a while.

rims are staying there 15" wouldn't want any bigger. will be resprayed black, other than that not sure yet

had more progress today, finished the gearbox off, then bolted box to bare block for mock up fit.

then dropped it in the bay, steering box misses block by 5mm, will need dodge charger sump which ive ordered along with everything else chrome sump, timing cover, rocker covers and air filter, only £150 aswell for the lot

Name: DSC_0293_zpsk7kyoabx.jpg
Views: 335
Size: 3.07 MB

also need I think dodge charger oil pick up looks right anyways so gone for that

first batch of goodies turned up today, edelbrock performer rpm intake, edelbrock thunder series 800 cfm carb, all new bearings and gaskets.

Name: DSC_0299_zpsbrspyyjr.jpg
Views: 337
Size: 2.88 MB

and my new forged pistons, ive slipped the gudgeon pin through an original piston and then my forged ones, the forged pistons are 2-3mm taller or 80 - 120 thou ! that's the closest I could measure batterys gone on vernier lol
assumeing its 120 thou which I think it is bang on 3mm, and the pistons were 0.150 in the hole means c/r was 7.74-1 stock, will now be 9.59-1 which with open chamber heads and my whiplash cam will need super unleaded and will maximise the potential it has on stock heads, alloy rpm heads could go less ccs and get upto 10.5 closed chamber design if I ever want to change them in the future and still be ok on the whiplash cam.

machineing is all booked up going in tmrw morning, im not having it balanced as engine is externaly balanced and I don't want to mess with it, each piston and pin is 60 grams heavier than the originals but it wont be an issue, the main thing is there all within 1 gram of each other.

full whiplash cam kit is now winging its way over from usa aswell, happy days
