P100 lights earthing prob?
Hi guys
i recently bought second hand rear lights for my p100 unfortunately they still dont work. I figure it was the metal connections on the back of the lights and also the connector that clips in to the lights. So i decided to wire all the bulbs separately and cut off the connector block and attach the wires cuting out metal at back of lights and connector block. I am now getting the lights working but they are very very dim you can bearly see the re on so i figure its an earth problem. I am wondering if anyone new of a earthing point at the back of the truck. Or if anyone can shed any light on this. As its turning in to a nightmare i have had this truck for 3 months and still havent got it on the road yet this is the final hurdle to get it back on the road any help would be great.

Like above. Use a bigger earth cable (at least 2.5mm˛) as short as possible from the lamp carrier to shell. If you don't find an existing ground point you can use a tap drill. The bolts for the taillight fixture will do the job, but there are better and more massive points.
The original cables are often undersized and will cause transfer resistance and then the plug-connector will melt after some time. No wonder, if you imaging that the power of ca. 5 bulbs (sometimes many bulbs glow at the same time) go back through a pathetic 0.75mm˛/1mm˛ earth cable.

Earthing
Cheers for the reply everyone. I am going to try the bolts for the tail lights first. I must admit ford did a rubbish job designing the light clusters and earthing and wiring for the rear of the p100. Its utter rubbish and i notice even the heat from the bulbs have melted the clusters a little. And i will indeed be using 2.5 cable. If i find a decent cluster that would fit and look ok i would be doing it sharpish.

Call Ian @ RS Turbo Breakers in Poole 01202 547070. He has new P100 lights for sale. Tell him 3dr P100 Chris put you in touch and he might give you some discount. Clean the bulb holders up and bend back the metal lugs and they will work as good as new.
Get on ebay and buy the plastic covers that go over the back to keep the water out. Ive got a pic if that helps as i found some genuine old stock on ebay. Otherwise they will just corrode.
