Mk4 Escort Heated Screen Wiring
Trying to 'upgrade' to a heated screen via insurance and was wandering what folk used for wiring when connecting them up.
Bare in mind theres no way I'll ever find the proper bits of loom from a Ghia/RS or whatever.
Is it possible to use a rear screen relay and make up my own loom with some spade connectors, switch and sticky tape? Usual DIY method.
Would be interested to hear what others have used who've done similar heated screen retro-fit upgrades.
Last time I messed about withe heating elements it was in the form of a stick-on kit wired direct to battery!

The wiring is quite simple, you need a suitable relay (The standard one has a built in timer and so switches the screen off after around 10 minutes), a feed from battery to and from the relay to the screen, earth the screen and the relay, the live to the switch comes from the alt D terminal (The earth for battery warning light).
This is done so the screen only operates with the engine running and hence this gives the relay the 12V feed to energize it due to the amount of power the screen draws.
Doesn't have to be like this (Although screen should not run without engine) although I would still use a switched live so the screen does not inadvertently get left on.

Cheers. Kinda of the lines I was thinking along.
Just need a timed relay capable of handling the power. I'll have to grab one from a rear screen setup at the scrappy. I know mk4 escort and even mk2 fessy ones are on a timer but am unsure about other vehicles.
Guess its a case of suck it and see - worst case I have to remember to switch the thing off when not needed. I'll run it off switched feed as you say so as not to kill batts.

Sierra rear screen is on a timer but even so the front screen draws way more power than the rear so still check this relay is man enough.
A good idea another member has done on here is spur off the heated rear screen for a switched feed for the front, just need enough power to energize the relay.
