I'm Finding My Feet Here Now

Hi guys
I've been having some problems with my Idle Speed Control Valve for some years now and have to clean it regularly.
I think it has something to do with the fact the piston seems to be very used (26 years now) and there's a gap between it and the main body. I think that makes some dirt build up and makes it seize.
I'm thinking of making a new piston that's a tight fit to solve the problem but I need to know how it works.
Is it magnetic or the shaft just goes up and down thus making the piston go up and down?
Any input on this topic?

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
How have you been cleaning it out?
I've found the spraying brake cleaner or similar doesn't do the trick and you have to take them completely apart via the small nut below the piston.
Would it not be easier to just get hold of another unit and take the piston out of that?
I believe the shaft just moves the piston, no magnet
