Default cosworth piston fitting problem (rings)

ive got a slight problem, ive got standard size cylinders on a 205 block standard size pistons and new standard size mahle piston rings fitted yet they will not go into the cylinders atall, had a mate round whos built plenty of engines and all he can think is i need a better piston ring compressor? both of us are baffled by it has anyone else ever had this problem or know what else i should try other then a different piston ring compressor?

With all due respect mate, if you cant work this out yourself by measuring the ring gap prior to installation then perhaps you should leave this critical job to a pro?

ring gap was checked on all rings before hand hence why we are baffled

Ok, well I still struggle to see what can be baffling. Thereare only three procedures.

  1. Install rings into bore and set ring gaps if required.
  2. Install rings onto pistons and ensure the same ring gap can be attained, thus proving piston grooves are correct
  3. Install into bores.
If step 1 fails... Ring is wrong for bore.
If step 2 fails... Piston is wrong for ring and maybe bore.

The installation is the simple bit! Clamp them up until ring gap is virtually (NOT totally) removed then slot them in!

Step 1 and 2 passing as fine guarantees that step 3 is possible.
