Default Air In The Cooling System

How do I bleed air from the cooling system?

I can't find any bleed valves or know where to release the air.

And what do you do there, just run the engine for a length of time with the return pipe off or fitted in that case with a swirl pot does it self bleed?

Its just a self bleed system i think. The highest point on the system is the thermostat. I have a 2wd burton thermostat housing, which has the second outlet which is blanked off. I usually just fill the system and remove the blanking plug until the air is relaesed and water flows out of it, meaning the system is full between the rad and thermostat. Then I just run it upto temp with the expansion cap off. As long as the thermostat opens as it should the air should just vent off. Oh, and the hot air heaters in the car need to be open.

The housing with the bleed off was an early design I think, this was before the "jiggle pin" was invented in the stat.

I have never had to do anything.

The juggle pin you said about, is it the top one on here? If so do you just unscrew it till fluid comes out?

I always thought a swirl pot worked from the housing in pic (right side) to the swirl pot then to going to rad, but there is also a small pipe on the top of the swirl pot going back to the header tank for air to escape but once the air is out then fluid would just circulate though the system... I may be wrong though.

Please can someone confirm this!
