Default Tried and tested wheels offsets (235 x 17 tyres) for Sapphire or Mk2 Hatch ?

Looking into getting some Revolution Millennium wheels.

Car is a Mk2 Sierra hatch and I assume that the arch clearance is the same as a Saph ?

8x17 rear

7½x17 front

Anyone know best offsets for arch clearance ?

Widest rear tyres I could get away with ?

Car has just been painted and has non rolled arches, would like to avoid rolling them !

Will have a 6 degree beam also if that makes a difference ?

Did ET 42 fill the arches OK ?

It's 2WD with 6 degree Cosworth beam and 3 door Cosworth hubs / ARB

Will 235/40/17 fit on the back ?

I just sold my RS 7 spokes that were 7½ x 17 et 38 with 215/40/17 they filled the arches nicely but were crap for brakes

EDIT for pic,

Do you reckon white wheels would be too much with frozen white?

Got a hankering for silver as it's more period...

Every car is different:
Ride height
Spring rates
Beam
Tyres used
Do you have 3 people in the back, or none.
Etc
All will have an influence on whether tyres will catch

A 6 degree rear beam will make a difference. The wheel will go more straight into the arch, making the change of touching the arch bigger.

This is the back on my 4x4 sapph with 6 degree rear beam and 17x8 wheels, ET 35 and 215/40 R17 tyres on the bumpstop. The arches are rolled and I could get my finger in between the arch and the tyre.

Thanks for that

What was the clearance like on the back of the wheel when it was on the bump stops ?

Looks like the 6 degree beam makes a big difference to camber change!

I would like to be able to use car fully loaded without rubbing.

ET38 would pull them in a bit, might even get away with ET40 with the 6 degree beam ...

On the fronts plenty, but on the rears not at all, I ran with no springs to make sure there was no clearance issues

That was a Sierra beam, xr arms for the arb mounts, escos 22mm arb, Granada's shafts and a Swedish 7.5" Sierra estate 3.14:1 diff

This was over 10 years ago when I fitted it all up and for 3 years it was my daily driver

I didn't really check the clearance on the inside of the tyre, but I think there was quite a bit. With higher offset wheels you should have a bit more room. BTW, it should have read:"The arches are rolled and I could NOT get my finger in between the arch and the tyre."

Bugger !

Thanks for all the help.

I reckon the best option would be to just by a front set of 7½x17 ET38 with 215/40/17 tyres, then try them on the back and measure for clearance to see what I can get away with...

I ran 8x17 et 37 with a 235/40/17 without any issues for years on the rear of my Saph. The only thing that suffered was the arch liner when I had 3 in the back and driving it hard.

I ran Toyo T1r and Goodyear Eagle F1.

I have Kuhmo V70a for it now, that will need the arches rolling and the inner arch massaging a little as there 9 1/4 wide even as there so square.

Fitting 235s on the back was one of the best things I did, at least it gave it a fighting chance of finding some grip.

That was without a proper beam! I am looking forward to driving it with a proper beam and even wider tyres this time!

Dave Ridgey and Frazer are already running that set up, they would be best to comment or else you might be waiting a while for my answer Mark.

As Ridgey says. there are so many factors that affect it. Brake bell thickness is another one. I measured 4mm difference iirc between a cast disc and a aluminium bell.
I'm running ET35s with 235 track tyres that measure up about 240+. Ally bells, 6 degree beam set at 1.5degree of camber. Arches have been rolled.

The backs are fine for clearance on the strut inside.

Had to get 6" long 550lb front springs so I could raise the spring platform above the tyre for clearance.
