Strange Fuel Delivery Problem

I'm restoring a Nov 89 Sierra DOHC Sapphire Ghia, fitted a new fuel pump, new fuel filter, can hear the pump prime for about 2 secs but no fuel is coming out the fuel delivery pipe on the fuel rail?
Any ideas please?

Anyway you could have got wiring backwards or the pipes the wrong way around?

Was it a like for like swap?

Have you connected the wires correctly, i.e. not reversed the polarity?

Cheers Martin, I dont think its possible to do that, the white plug only goes in one way and on the pump theres a large spade and a smaller spade teminal.

Yes new pump identical to old pipes fitted corectly fuel filter arrow of flow facing engine

The pump didn't have any bungs fitted to keep dirt out etc

Nothing obvious, it came with new mesh filter I fitted to bottom of pump the outlet pipe just pushed onto the pulse damper, I saw no bungs

The pump only primes for a second or so the fuel system / filter/pipes are dry should the pump run longer initialy? Why does it only run for a second or so?

Most efi cars the pump primes when the ignition is switched on then the pump stays off until the ecu see's the engine turning.

it seems very off that the fuel is not reaching the filter etc.

Is the pump external of the fuel tank? I haven't been under a sierra in some years and can't remember the set up.

No its in the tank, there must be a pint or more of fuel needed to fill the system and it only runs for a second or so, its been suggested on another forum to feed power directly to the pump to fill the system?

You could bridge the relay to keep it powered for a few seconds.

How much fuel is inside the tank?

Where did you get the fuel pump from, could it be faulty?

Did the car run with no issues prior to renewing the pump?

Theres 2 1/2 gallons of fresh fuel in the tank
The pump was brought from burton power and was bench tested before install
The cars a restore, it has'nt run since 2004

Has it got a fuel cut off inertia switch in the boot or footwell? Might be worth resetting that, but tbh I wouldn't expect the pump to work at all if that had tripped.

It has power, otherwise it wouldn't work.

I would check to make sure the fuel is getting to the pump.

Engine has run, albeit for about 20 seconds by introducing raw fuel into the inlet manifold, I am now considering I may have pushed the pump onto the delivery pipe a bit to high and the pump intake is sitting above current fuel level, (2.2 Gallons from dry probably about an inch deep in the tank) will be adding more fuel to tank later to see if it works!
I'm waiting arrival of new fuel injectors at the moment so testing on hold for a couple of days.


Update;
Added another 3 gallons of fuel, (Gauge now shows just under 1/2 a tank) bridged the relay and the pump ran continuously (Ran it for several minutes) but still no fuel out of delivery pipe at the fuel rail, I'm now stumped!


Here's the pump before install, there's 2 spade terminals a fat one and a smaller one, I connected it with the matching female spades on the wiring, could it be the wrong way round? and the pumps blowing instead of sucking?
I would like to avoid dropping the tank again if possible.

Turns out the new fuel pump appears faulty, it runs but dont pump, now drained removed tank and tested pump, runs but don't pump.

Brought from Burton Power, wont simply replace, have to send pump back at my expense for "testing" by manufacturer which could take some time, only alternative is to buy another pump which what I have had to do not very happy about the amount of time and labour fault chasing this problem.
