Default MTX 75 gearbox trouble

Hi all,

Now I thought these boxes were pretty indestructible. I mean, I haven't heard of one breaking at all.

I've only had my car back on he road for the last few hundred miles (I had been upgrading to the MTX box after blowing up the IB5 one). MTX box was great until about 100 miles in and it started getting a bit chattery when bringing up the clutch in 1st or reverse. Now there's a lot of chattering about and it sounds awful. It still works and once moving feels like any box should, changes gear fine, operates as it should.

Car is a Puma
Clutch is an Ap 4 paddle with very little slip, it's practically on/off.
Engine is Mk1 FRS running 288hp/282lbs ft at the hubs.. So not massive.

Has something started to wear?? It's sounds like the diff, it's that's area if someone listen closely from the outside whilst someone moves the car back and forth. When the car is jacked up there seems to be a lot of play in turning the wheels to when the diff is turning.. Perhaps an 1/8th turn.

Anyone experienced any trouble with this box or have an ideas what's wrong with it?

Thanks in advance.

Ben

Oh dear..

Is this a sign that nobody has had any trouble with this box before?!

Your right in that these boxes are pretty strong, but they will let go if not looked after.

Decent oil and regular changes will do the trick.

does it whine or chatter whilst driving along?

or is it only when bringing the clutch up?

Thanks for replies.

It's a standard FRS box so supposedly has quaife diff and the inside of it certainly looks the same as the one I had for my IB5 box. The clattering sort of noise is only when you bring the clutch up. Otherwise the box is nice and smooth and silent whilst I gear.

I bought the box second hand off flee bay, and was told it had done 51k. No idea though. I obviously put fresh oil in and even let it run out to start with to try to give it a little flush. The bit of old oil in there didn't look that bad and certainly wasn't swirly or black. Quite normal in fact.

There is a chance it's an inner cv but does seem there is more play in the box than usual, only in my experience.

Thanks again!
