wasted spark conversion

Im having a lot of issues with my new wasted spark conversion kit, it will only fire on one side of the coil the other side wont fire at all, i found that my new kit has a faulty ignition amp, paid another £45.00 for a new one, but still no good, MSD are away till next Tuesday, i checked a treble checked the wiring all seems good, any ideas, will probably have to wait till msd are back. anyone got any pictures of the solder side of the board for an L8 ecu, just for comparison any other help please would be good. Begining to wish i need got this kit now.:?

I had problems with mine only running on 2 cylinders.

It turned out to be a fault with the old ignition amp. Try unplugging one amp at a time to check

Yes i know for definate the new amp is knackered as i tested it out the other plug, but i also think that the new coil pack is knackered as well. as i plugged the good amplifier on the other side of the coil but still no spark swap it it back and it works fine on one side of the coil again. waiting for MSD to get back from holidays to send it all back to them for testing.

Did you fit the driver in the ECU or did you send it to MSD to be done??

cozi500 30-09-2013 08:50 AM

I fitted the driver into the ECU as per the instructions, now MSD have fitted another driver into it, still wont work. I purchased another ECU from a guy on here with wasted spark already fitted by MSD, that wont work either im convinced the MSD loom is wrong, on the OE plug that fits into the MSD loom the black wire from pin 25 on the ecu go to ground ? and the brown grond wire goes to the black wire on MSD connector in other words im sure these are the wrong way round, ill post a pic

Who makes these looms for them ?
Ive asked who is making their looms in another thread but they didnt reply.

Have they got back to you yet ?

My first guess would be that the pins 1 and 5 are the wrong way around on the MSD loom. The supplier cant of got much else wrong with the colour coding they have used.

Thats if it is the loom though. Have you tried another coil ?

cozi500 08-10-2013 10:45 AM

Yes turned out to be the loom, took out two ecu,s and two ignition amplifiers, Matt lewis motorsport gave me one of his looms to try along with two ignition amps, and low and behold fired up first time. Now i have two L8 ECU,s spare with new drivers in them that MSD repaired.

What's the general consenus on these kits, everytime I read about them people seem to have one issue or another.
I've never had any bother with the original setup, but it's one of the only things on the car I haven't upgraded, so I'm always pondering changing to WS, but never do.

Mine went on with no dramas whatsoever Rog, best mod on a Cossie imo.

Fitted mine last year with no problems fired frist time great bit of kit.

cozi500 08-10-2013 03:04 PM

The kit is excellent now all the problems are ironed out, wouldn't go back to coil now runs so much smoother, i also did a tacho modification on mine, with all parts from mapplins cost £2.50 to do the mod,two diodes and a zener diode. Now works spot on.

DaveCrack 08-10-2013 03:18 PM

Took some fettling with my 2WD Tacho to work but now its spot on works really well. wouldnt wanna go back.

cozi500 08-10-2013 03:32 PM

Tacho is the easy bit. Put a diode a coil A and another on coil B then join them both up to a zener diode, then solder a wire from the zener to the tacho job done. ;-)

What type and rating diode's did you use mate, I'm looking into it but can't find any info anywhere.....

Thanks!

cozi500 08-10-2013 06:25 PM

coil A 1 and 4 out side wire on multi plug to coil use 1N4004 diode
coil B 2 and 3 out side wire on multi plug to coil use 1N4004 diode
these should be incorporated into the wiring on both side of the coil do not cut the wiring as these spur of the loom on there own then join both diodes together using a link wire, then solder the zener diode to this. Zener is 1N532B / 1N5355B 15-18 volt, make sure your green tacho wire is cut from the old loom, the join the zener side of your wiring to this and this should only go to the tacho and no where else. works perfect, do not use the use the wiring supplied from pin 21 on the ecu make sure this is disconnected as the wasted spark driver supplies voltage from this to run your tacho but this doesn't work, see how you get on
