Default Please Help, Enginge Managment Light has come on. DTC 9202

First post so please go easy on me...

I bought a 03 Plate ST170 over the weekend. Was really happy with the purchase and looked like a Clean ST.

Before driving home I filled it up with petrol, then drove home and to work the next day with no problems, About 110 miles altogether.

The next day on the way home from work the Low fuel light came on and the fuel gage was reading empty. Not thinking any more about it i carried on driving and within 10 mins it went back up to full where i would of expected it to be.

The next day on the way to work the engine management light came on. Fuel gauge still at normal and hadn't played up.

By now I was not impressed as only just bought the car and had visions of this maybe costing a lot of money!

I looked online and found a way to do the self test by pressing the the trip reset button and switching on the ignition.

This came back with error DTC 9202. Done some research and found online that the description for this number is 'Fuel Sender Open Circuit'

My question is should i just reset this by taking off the battery and seeing if it comes back? Or should i be doing some more checks first?

If this does persist what item looks to be at fault and needs replacing?

I also have another problem with the wipers but will post this as another thread.

Thanks for your help in advance!!

Your method only shows problems with the dashboard, you will not get engine codes.
The code you do get, explains the behavior of the fuel gauge and the low fuel light.
Could be a bad contact somewhere in the wiring between dash and fuel sender.

For the EML you will have to get the codes read with a diagnostic machine.

Ive got a ODB 11 cable / reader on order and when it arrives I will find out what the elm code is.

For now is it worth resetting by taking off the battery and seeing whether it comes back or just a 1 time glitch.

You can try that if it comes back in day or too start by issolating Nd testing connections on fuel sender unit and work your way back, hopefully just a faulty fuel sender unit

Thanks doga, Don't suppose you have any in depth instructions on how to do this?

I'm just wondering if the seller had tried this so that the light wasn't on when i viewed the car.

I not saying he has tried it on but may have as this is a common trick with car dealers who reset the car before you buy/view it there for having no idea it got issues! And some of them just remove the bulb in dash so you dont know its on!

I think under back seats is access to fuel sender plug if not have to get under car unplug and put an electrical tester on it!

The car seems like it's driving fine, power all the way through the RPM range. Would i notice any other symptoms if it was the fuel sender?

Not really all the sender does is picks up a signal of fuel level in tank and sends it to clocks throught a relay and ecu! St170's are juicey and i think when light comes on you get 50/70 miles

OK makes sense. Looks like a sh*ty job to do as it's on the top of the fuel tank.

Do you know if the fuel pump and sender is 1 thing? or are they separate?

Update: Disconnected battery for arround half an hour, reconnected which cleared engine management light.

Engine Management light stayed off for a couple of days and now it's back on.

Thinking about buying an ODB2 cable and checking what the error code is rather than doing the test by holding the trip button in.

Can anyone recommend a good cable and software for this?

Thanks

Have a look here: http://www.forscan.org/home.html
That can do a lot more than any common EOBD/OBD2 reader.

Took the plunge and and bought a stand a loan scanner it's a D900 Version 2012. Seller said it should work on a ST170 but when i plug it in and run the scan it doesn't find the car??

The ignition is on and I've checked the data connection fuse in the glove box which is OK. I have to select the car maker, click scan, it then says it's scanning then it restarts again.

Am I missing something here? Tried the scanner in my g/f's TT and works perfectly.

Is it possible a previous owner has re-maped the ecu and now i cannot access it via the ODB port?

I've put some pictures of the scanner connector below. Thanks

Still having issues with this!

Engine management light comes on and after doing the Cluster Diagnostic Test comes up with DTC 9209.

Does anyone know or have a guide on changing the fuel sender unit?

Thanks

After getting anoyed with all these cabels and Scanners off eBay that don't work i bought one from Argos (as i knew i could take it back if it didn't)

This is the one i bought: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/7402759.htm

I know it's a bit expensive but it 100% works with Ford Focus ST170.

This one is a bit cheaper from eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RAC-DIAGNO...item416904234c

Next problem is finally got to read the code and it's the dreaded P1518 Intake Manf Runner Ctrl Stuck Open.

Jesus you spent a lot of money just to read a code, I'd have took it to your nearest garage, they'd have done it for half hours labour at most.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U480-Any-c...item3f20e02052

I've got one of these, worked perfect on my old st170.

I know, tell me about it! I looked at the one you sent a link to and when i contacted the sellers they weren't to sure and i already had the D900 which didn't work which they said it would!

I thought at least with the one from Argos if it didn't work i could take it back and get my money back. Although i still might and get the cheaper one from eBay

Local garage wanted Ł60 to plug it in there machine! So i thought i'd just buy myself one and charge a pint a time

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but my 2.0 focus has this 9202 code on the dash, but my traction control light stays on, engine management light goes off after a few seconds of turning the ignition on as normal.

I have ran a diagnostics test on it using scanmaster ELM but it found no trouble codes.

Anyone have an idea of what to try?

ELM interface with Scanmaster will ONLY show DTC's in engine and automatic gearbox.
NOT in the dashboard, the Abs, the Airco and whatever more there is on the car.

Traction control error needs to be read with a Ford specific code reader.
