Best way to get good earthing points on fresh paint
As above. Ive had a full respray on my xr3i and having a few electrical problems which i think are due to bad earths.
I have to away abit of paint to get an earth but don't think there good enough. Whats the best way to get a good earth without making a mess off the new paint job? |
I beleive u dont have to sand etc as the bolt will transfer it to the shell (or so im told)
|
Ive had to relocate some of the earthing points so they would be just earthed to paint which isnt good enough.
I was going to mask off a little area just big enough to earth to and put a little bit of turps just to get a good clear area but then i dont want it to rust :( |

Had to put the engine and whole car back together when paint was only 2 days old. God knows how i didnt scratch it!
Its the base coat thats the tough one to get off |
Only way is to scrape the area back to bare metal. After you connect the earth, a smear of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) all round the join will prevent rust, just like you do with battery terminals to prevent corrosion.
|
i re-taped the holes and used a smear of conduction grease on a new bolt.
|
So i can use any grease? It won't prevent a good earth?

you could try those serrated washer type things, as you tighten the bolts they scratch the paint until they hit the metal giving you a good contact point
